NWS 2012
New Way Singers 2012
~40th Anniversary Tour~
June 10th – June 24th
Thank you for your applications to the 2012 New Way Singers program. The Worship Arts Department will be mailing out responses to NWS applicants the week of March 26th.
What is New Way Singers?
New Way Singers is a touring musical group for high school students founded in 1972 by Lowell Burkum. For 40 wonderful years Nebraska Christian Collegehas toured the United States with these gifted students, conveying the message of Jesus Christ through song. NWS is an incredible experience for students both musically and spiritually. High school students are eligible to audition for choir or band after they have completed their freshman year until they have completed their senior year. Applications for 2012 are due March 5th.
How will I benefit from participating in NWS?
1. NWS provides each participant an opportunity to grow musically through ensemble training, vocal or instrumental technique workshops, and the singing and playing of a variety of music.
2. NWS provides each participant the opportunity to grow spiritually through mentoring relationships, small groups, daily devotions, and quiet times.
3. NWS provides the opportunity to build lifelong friendships with people from all over the country who share similar passions and musical desires.
What will we be doing during these 2 weeks?
We will spend the first part of the two weeks (June 10th-13th) on the NCC campus in intense vocal and band rehearsals, learning new vocal techniques and spiritually preparing for the upcoming tour. NWS participants will stay in the dorm suites on NCC’s campus. (Band members will register and begin rehearsals on Saturday, June 9th, a day before members of the choir arrive to register.)
For the second part of the two weeks (June 14th – June 24th), we will be traveling via bus to concert locations in the Mid-West United States. While on tour, students will stay either with host families from sponsoring churches, in a hotel, or at the churches themselves. All provide a beneficial and memorable time for students.
A final concert will be held on Sunday, June 24th in Omaha, NE. Friends, family and alumni of NWS are all invited.
What are the musical expectations?
Each singer must exhibit a high level of vocal versatility and each band member must exhibit a high level of competency on his/her instrument. NWS participants MUST have their music memorized and ready to rehearse upon arrival, regardless of choir or band involvement. We firmly believe in striving to give God our excellence. Therefore, the NWS staff will spend rehearsal time on in-depth instruction and training, rather than memorization.
Performances TBD
When is my application packet due?
All packets are due postmarked/submitted by March 5, 2012. Applications received past this date, will only be considered if open spots on the tour remain. All applications are online this year and can be found at www.nechristian.edu on the Worship Arts page starting December 1st. In the online application, you will need to fill out personal information, answer several questions, upload MP3s of your musical audition and attach 2 reference letters (one from a Youth pastor or Senior Pastor and one from a Professional musician, such as a choir director, teacher, or private lesson instructor). All elements will have to be filled out, uploaded, and attached before an application can be submitted. A $25.00 non-refundable deposit must also accompany your application. This amount will be applied to your total cost. Please mail this application fee to Nebraska Christian College with attention to the Worship Arts Department. Please also note the student’s name and put ‘NWS’ in the memo line.
What do I need to do for my audition?
For Vocalists:
- 32 measures of 2 contemporary songs in varying styles with accompaniment. Make sure the song allows you to demonstrate your vocal ability, range, and versatility.
- One scale or vocal exercise on any syllable. The goal is to demonstrate how high and low you can comfortably sing.
For Instrumentalists:
Since instrumental parts are limited, students auditioning for instruments are also required to audition vocally. This is to ensure that when students are not playing in the band on certain selections, they can participate as part of the choir. The requirements below should be in addition to your vocal audition. Acoustic/Electric Guitars and Keyboard: Please include 2 modern worship songs (one fast, one slow) played with a metronome.
Bass Guitar and Drums: Please include 2 modern worship songs (one fast, one slow) with either guitar or keyboard to accompany.
Wind Instruments: Please include 2 modern worship songs (one fast, one slow) with accompaniment. We also ask that you include a scale demonstrating your range.
How will I know if I am selected to be in NWS?
Students will be notified via mail by March 26th regardless of acceptance. Those who are accepted will be sent a letter with memorization and lifestyle covenants. Once the covenants and 1st payment are received, you will be sent a rehearsal CD and sheet music. Please note that if the first payment is not postmarked by the due date, your spot on the 2012 NWS tour will be forfeited. If the second payment is not postmarked by the due date, an additional $50 fee will be charged. We will accept the top 80 students from the applications. Students who are accepted but not in the top 80 students will be ordered on an alternate list. Should members from the first 80 decide not to participate, we will contact the alternates in order for an opportunity to join the tour.
