In the Field
Students spend hours in the classroom and even more hours reading books, giving presentation, and writing papers and this is what most would define as an education. We take a slightly different approach to the pedagogy at NCC (that’s a fancy way for saying we have a slightly different approach to how our teachers teach).
Giving students opportunities to experience their education or to put their education into action is a priority for the faculty of NCC. Below is a list of the options available to every student to learn through practice. These experiences, we feel, set us apart.
Week of Ministry
The Week of Ministry (WOM) is special week where we take the learning experience out of the classroom and into the field. Although we incorporate out of the classroom learning opportunities into all of our classes, the WOM is a centerpiece of our student training. ALL students, without exception, spend a week in the field serving. Students in the past have traveled to Croatia, Honduras, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, Utah, Texas, Montana, Kansas, Colorado, and right here in Nebraska to take Jesus to the world. Holding a hand, cleaning up abandoned buildings, filing papers, serving orphans with the goal of sharing Jesus’ love is what makes this week special. It brings to life all the endless hours of study. It provides students with a clear way in which to turn the theoretical into the pragmatic.
Internships
Students can also gain ministry experience while at Nebraska Christian College through ministerial internships. With the help of our alumni and friends, and faculty and staff students will often spend their summers serving as student and or children’s ministers, pastors, camp counselors, and worship leaders. With Omaha right in our backyard, students can often extend an internship throughout the year if they choose. We have students that currently serve as weekend pastors, work with a prison ministry, and lead worship at several local churches throughout the year while they study at NCC.
Mentored Ministry
We believe strongly that Christian education and ministry training is more than head knowledge. That is why a key part of our curriculum is Mentored Ministry. Every student is in a relationship with a trained, mature Christian leader. The purpose of the program is three fold:
- Shaping the Heart for personal, moral, and spiritual formation
- Shaping the Will by exploring ministry calling and giftedness
- Shaping the Hands with practical, supervised, ministry experiences
Students receive academic credit for this program and nearly all of our students are in a mentored ministry relationship throughout their time with NCC. This relationship is foundation and reflects the mentoring relationship we see between Paul and Timothy. We have structured an environment that our students can access the wisdom of their elders in the hopes of encouraging personal and professional growth.
