Bible College Myths

As with every genre of college, myths and perceptions abound concerning Bible colleges. Some being more accurate than others. We would like to share with you some of our favorite myths and do our best job of “myth-busting”.
Myth #1 There is NO fun to be had at a Bible college.
We are not a modern day monastery or convent where students eat their meals in silence and only study one book in three languages. This myth could not be further from the actual lives of our students. Last year students created a movie loosely based on the popular TV show “the Office”, they created an outdoor theater on campus to watch movies, they participated in R.U.S.H. week, they had a fight night, sang in a local coffee house, and thoroughly enjoyed the sights’n'sounds and events of Omaha Metro area.
Myth #2 You have to be at the pinnacle of your Christian life to go to Bible college.
Students who attend Bible college come from diverse Christian backgrounds. There are students that commit their life to Christ the summer before they arrive and are just trying to figure out what it means to be a Christian, and there are students who have been exposed to Christ their whole life that discover for the first time what it means to have a relationship with Him; both discover the same truth. No matter where you are in your walk, NCC is a place that wants to help you grow deeper relational roots with your Savior. There are even students on our campus who hear the truth of Jesus for the first time, so whether you think you are at the pinnacle of your Christian walk or not, we hope to help you to an even more fulfilling place than where you are.
Myth #3 Bible college students have only one thing in mind…marriage.
Unlike Las Vegas or Match.com, we do not exist for the purpose of finding a quick spouse nor do we exist to serve as a matchmaking service. Trust us, we would make a lot more money if we did. The fact of the matter is there are many students who come to NCC and do find their true love. We celebrate this, but understand that this is not for everyone. What we do hope to foster in the lives of all students is what it means to develop and maintain healthy relationships.
Myth #4 Bible college is just a place of Christian indoctrination and memorization.
Yes and no. As a spiritual discipline we do ask our students to commit some of the Bible to memory. Students, however, spend an overwhelming amount of time studying subjects like the Bible as Literature, Greek and/or Hebrew and other courses designed to elicit their own understanding of what the Bible says. We want thinking Christian leaders, not drones.
Myth #5 Bible degrees are not as good as a regular degree.
Education is a good thing…period! There is always a shortage of people who know what the Bible says, and regardless of what career you choose, understanding God’s truth will allow you to minister wherever you go. Our programs and our institution are accredited by the ABHE, the accreditation body that audits and evaluates Bible colleges, which means your degree from NCC can take you where you want to go!
Myth #6 Bible college is just a safety college (you know, just in case you can’t get in elsewhere).
Not so. For many of our students, we were their first choice institution. We have students that turn down opportunities at other Bible colleges and other major four-year institutions. There are some students who use their time at NCC simply to gain a clearer perspective on what they were made for, but the majority of our students know exactly why they are here.
Myth #7 It is better to get a practical degree so I have something to fall back on, and then go get a seminary degree.
That is one way, sure, but we believe it is best to follow the path God has laid out for you. If He has called you to ministry, then you should have no fears about getting a Bible degree and can dismiss this notion of a “degree to fall back on”. Yes, the path of ministry is not an easy one (and often is one that scares caring parents, because ministers do not garner the wages of a lawyer or doctor), but if God is calling you we encourage you to follow your heart regardless of the “thinking of man”.
